40)The Roots – Clones

Song: Clones

Album: Illadelphhalflife

Year: 1996

Illadelphhalflife was really when I got into The Roots, I dug “Proceed” but I just wasn’t really moved to check them out. I wrote off the cool jazz style as too much like Digable Planets who I loved, but when Funkmaster Flex started playing “Clones”, it made me really proud to be from New York, this was like a concerted and well executed effort at winning New York over. We grew to know and love the lyrical capabilities of Black Thought, Malik B and Dice Raw, but the wild card opening verse from Mars Co-Op (I think he’s Dice’s mans and them) was amazing to say the least. Mars shattered the idea that The Roots were jazzy, lest I neglect to mention ?uestlove’s insane drum buildups before each verse and a performance rivaling anything The Beatminerz or Pete Rock was doing at the time.
