71)Ultramagnetic MCs – Poppa Large (East Coast Mix)

Song: Poppa Large (East Coast Mix)

Album: Poppa Large 12″

Year: 1992

No grandiose back story here, while I appreciated all of Ultramganetic’s innovation in production and with the rhyme styles hearing their debut Critical Beatdown years after its 1988 release, I was never a super fan like that. I may need to spend more time with their music to get a stronger grasp, but “Poppa Large” takes me back to reminders of the video. It was pretty much the most bugged out thing I had seen by that point in elementary school and I loved the meaningless hook “I’m Poppa Large, big shout on the east coast”.

Though Im not much of a Kool Keith subscriber past this song and “Weapon World” off of Prince Paul’s A Prince Among Thieves, his performance here was top notch and the whole pace of the song is one of an adrenaline boost. Also, this was the era when the song you fell in love with via the video wouldnt necessarily be the version found on the album (other infamous examples include The Fugees’ “Nappy Heads”, Black Moon’s “I Got Cha Opin” and the Bush Babees “Remember We” remixes), doing research I just found out this was produced by The Beatminerz, a fact I never knew this whole time.
